Ekklesia: God’s Idea of Churchනියැදිය

Day 4: The church provides spiritual covering
In a world that promotes self-determination, it seems almost outrageous to submit to the will of another. This is even more so when we often see examples of authority and power being abused. Yet, these do not nullify the pastoral instruction in Hebrews 13:17. In fact, Hebrews 13:17 directs both leaders and followers towards a beautiful dynamic of mutual submission that can exist when we follow God’s ways. Obedience is not only a joy to leaders, but also beneficial for the body of Christ.
In 1 Peter 5:2-3, leaders are called to be examples to the flock, not using their position to lord over those under their care. The phrase “lord it over” refers to the use of power without a servant’s heart, exerting influence for the purpose of one’s own ego and not for the glory of Christ or the good of the people. This passage is a sober warning to leaders about the sheer weight of spiritual responsibility. Leaders and spiritual mentors are called to protect the flock and provide spiritual covering. They will be held accountable to rebuke, teach, encourage, and lead us under their care, so that we will mature in Christ.
While leaders are called to lead sacrificially, we are called to submit to God’s appointed authority. Many of us have had leaders who shaped our spiritual journey and helped us grow in our faith. They were faithful to share the ways of God, and their lives role-modelled godly living. We were inspired and deeply impacted by their leadership. As long as our leaders’ plans and directives are not out of line with Scripture, we should submit to them and join them in building up the body of Christ. We can make it a joy for them to provide spiritual covering over our lives by being vulnerable with our struggles and being open to their counsel.
Reflect & Respond
- What can you do to make your pastor/leader’s work a joy and not a burden?
- Take the time to pray for, call, or text one of your church leaders, past or present, to encourage, affirm and thank them for making an impact in your life.
