Ekklesia: God’s Idea of Churchනියැදිය

Day 3: The church is the body of Christ
The Word of God personifies the Church by likening it to the human body. The parts of our body look different, function differently, and accomplish different purposes. Likewise, there is great diversity in the body of Christ, both in gifts and in abilities. Yet, every member has the common goal of carrying out God’s purposes.
In God’s eyes, no member of Christ’s body is any “better” or “worse” than another member. Have you ever accidentally stubbed your toe? Most of us don’t pay much attention to this particular body part until it is injured! There are body parts that appear to be of little value, yet these still belong to the body. Some are visible, and some are behind the scenes, but every part of the body is valuable. Every member of the church matters, because we are inter-dependent on one another to function.
Because we are all given unique gifts by God to serve the body of Christ, we need not compare ourselves with fellow believers. Each gift that God has given us is given not for its own benefit, but to serve the body. When we choose not to serve the church, we are denying the body of what we can offer. What we offer may not be everything—none of us are meant to be—but it certainly matters. As all of us come together and dedicate our gifts to be used for the good of the body of Christ, we can be confident that God’s Church will be built up to greater glory.
Reflect & Respond
- Are you prone to comparing yourself and your gifts with others in the body of Christ? How can you apply Romans 12:3-8 in your perspective towards others in the body of Christ?
- What are some of your gifts and abilities? How can you use them to build the church?
- Do something creative (anything!) with your gifts and abilities to bless your church community this week.
