Steal, Kill, Destroy

David serves as an archetype or a shadow of the one to come. The one who is worthy of all praise. Jesus. Jesus didn’t just defeat a giant, He defeated death itself. The point of the story isn’t that we’d glory in David. But that we’d get a picture of the “Greater David”. The true Anointed One. The Messiah. Jesus.

Goliath intended to not only kill whoever came to fight him in battle, but to then plunder the Israelites and destroy them forever. However, David shows up and with one stone, everything Goliath intended, he became the victim of.

One rock to the head and Goliath is killed. But David has no sword, so he takes Goliath’s. Then he lifts the sword and cuts off the head of the giant; utter destruction. The Israelites, as a result, experience life like never before, free from the threat of the giant. This is a picture of Jesus!

Jesus says in John 10:10 that the plan of the enemy is to steal, kill, and destroy, but that He [Jesus] has come that we might have life, and life to the full.

The enemy thought at Calvary that as Jesus bled and died, he had finally succeeded in stealing, killing, destroying God and His children. But the reverse occurred. 3 days later, one stone was moved, and death died. A grave was robbed of its occupant and Hell was robbed of its keys, and as a result, in Jesus, you can experience life like never before - free from the threat of death. And when Jesus comes again, He is coming with a sword in His mouth to utterly destroy the work of the Enemy.

Take courage. This isn’t just David’s story. It’s yours. This story is epic because it points to what God has done and is doing on your behalf. Rejoice.

Reflection Question: How does remembering Christ as the “Greater David” change the way you face today’s battles?
