What’s the Hurry?

Women are always in a hurry, have you noticed? We hurry to potty train our children and then hurry them off to preschool so we can have more leisure time. And yet, when the kids finally leave home, we long for the days when they would put their little arms around our necks. But we hurried through all of that.

We hurry through the grocery store because we have to make it to the drug store, the gym, and the dry cleaners before five o'clock. And in our hurry to check things off of our to-do list, we miss the elderly man who needs a word of encouragement and never even think to help the young mom with three toddlers and a cart filled with groceries.

We hurry through high school so we can grow up and be an adult who hurries through life and ends up in middle age, a tired, weary, woman who says, “Why was I in such a hurry?”

The devil, who is your archenemy, wants you to be worn out and run ragged through your entire life. As you fill your life with stuff, things, and busyness, he is laughing hysterically at you, knowing that he just won this battle (See Daniel 7:25).

Satan is wearing down the saints of the Most High God with busyness and the tyranny of the urgent. Why are you listening to his strategies?

He knows that you will lose every battle you face if he can wear you down. What will you lose? Not your eternal salvation, of course, but you will lose your temper and your patience. You will also lose your perspective and your peace of mind. You might lose your creativity and your daily disciplines.

We look at our busyness as an invisible badge of honor, and somehow we think that “more” makes us in some way “better.” The mistake that women often make when dealing with stress overload is that they derive their value from what they do, rather than from who they are.

Remember the truth that Eve quickly forgot: you are made in the image of God! What more could you want?

DAILY DEPOSIT:

…but the worries of the world, and the deceitfulness of riches, and the desires for other things enter in and choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful. – Mark 4:19 NASB1995
