The Seven Sayings of Jesus From the Crossනියැදිය

"Father, Into Your Hands I Commit My Spirit" (Luke 23:46)
Jesus' final words before His death are a prayer of trust and surrender: "Father, into Your hands I commit My spirit."This is a direct quote from Psalm 31:5, a Jewish evening prayer. Devout Jews would recite this verse before sleep, placing their lives into God’s care.
The Greek word for commit is παρατίθεμαι (paratíthemai), meaning to entrust, to place into someone’s care. Jesus is not simply dying—He is entrusting Himself to the Father.
This moment stands in contrast to His earlier cry, "My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?" (Mark 15:34). Though He had borne the full weight of sin, His relationship with the Father is restored. His final breath is one of confidence, not defeat.
Then, something remarkable happens:
- The temple curtain is torn in two, signifying that the barrier between God and humanity has been removed.
- The Roman centurion recognizes Jesus' identity, declaring, "Surely this was a righteous man."
- The work of redemption is finished, and Jesus rests in the Father’s hands.
Personal Application
- What areas of your life do you need to entrust into God’s hands?
- How does Jesus' confidence in the Father challenge you to surrender more fully?
- What does the tearing of the temple curtain mean for your relationship with God?
Prayer
Father, into Your hands, I commit my life. Just as Jesus surrendered to You, help me to trust You with every part of my heart — my fears, my future, my desires. Thank You that through Jesus, I have full access to Your presence. I rest in You. Amen.
