Day 13: Realigning our lives – the Holy Spirit empowers

Wait…there is more

No one likes to wait. Long queues at the shops, waiting lists for admission, test results – it’s a real test of character and sometimes even of endurance!

Before his ascension, Jesus told his disciples to wait. He had been raised to life after the crucifixion; he had appeared to hundreds of people to prove the fulfilment of his promise that he would not remain in the grave. And now he instructed his disciples to wait. There would be more. The third Person of the Trinity, God the Holy Spirit, would be poured out to empower followers of Jesus to carry on his work.

This is crucial. It is also worth noting that Jesus made it clear to his close-knit group of apprentices that after he departed, they would need Someone - “It is better for you that I go, for if I do not go, the Holy Spirit (Advocate) will not come.” (John 16:7 NIV)

Guaranteed success!

In Galatians 5:16 (NIV) Paul assures us that the quality of life and the power of witness God intends for his children has a supernatural Source, the Person of God the Holy Spirit.

“So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.”

Do you want this kind of life, one where you find “the desires of the flesh” gradually diminishing and the abundant new life in Christ overflowing into all areas of your life? Ask him in prayer now.

Prayer reflection

Holy Spirit, I thank you that the key to a more fulfilling, fruitful life is not trying harder in my own strength but surrendering more to your work in my life. I choose today to “walk by the Spirit”, being sensitive to your direction, as I follow in the footsteps of Jesus. Amen.
