Satan’s Strategy – Taking Out the One God Loves Most

Job’s Suffering and Satan’s Schemes
Satan approached God and asked for permission to test Job, a man of integrity. Satan’s belief was simple: if he could take away everything Job had—his health, wealth, and family—Job would curse God. Why? Because Satan’s ultimate goal wasn’t just to destroy Job; it was to prove that man’s love for God could be broken. The attack wasn’t random—it was targeted, strategic, and deeply personal.

The Day My Family Was Targeted

I’ve come to believe something through the pain of my past: The enemy has a plan for your life, just like God does.

And while God’s plan is to prosper you, to give you hope and a future, Satan’s plan is clear: steal, kill, and destroy. That’s not metaphor. That’s his actual mission.

He’s not content to distract you with minor sins. His real goal? To take you out. To wreck your heart. To fracture your family. To twist your view of God so deeply that you question if He’s even good.

I saw that strategy unfold in my own family.

In 1939, my biological grandfather, Donald Frank True, died by suicide—taking his life in front of his 3-year-old son, my father. That day everything changed. It introduced a wound so deep, it reverberated through generations. My father grew up unable to emotionally connect, never truly healing from the trauma. His mother became an alcoholic. His stepfather was distant. The idea of a “healthy home” was foreign to him.

When my father was old enough to start his own family, he struggled to connect with his own family, his wife, his hurts. Enough so, it evolved once again, into broken family, only this time by my mother’s decision to divorce my father.

Decades later, that same spirit of brokenness echoed again when my sister, Robin, ended her life—leaving two young boys behind. The generational pain repeated, and I was left wondering: Why does the enemy attack like this?

And the answer hit me like a flood: Because we are what God values most.

You are the enemy’s target because you are God’s treasure.

He attacks your identity because you bear God’s image.
He attacks your family because it reflects God’s design.
He attacks your hope because it’s the root of your faith.

And if he can’t destroy you, he’ll do everything he can to make you ineffective.

Devotional Reflection

You might wonder, “Why is my life so hard? Why does it feel like everything is against me?”

It may not be because you’re weak.
It might be because you’re dangerous.

The enemy doesn’t waste bullets. He doesn’t bother with what isn’t a threat. So when you feel under attack, it may be because heaven sees your potential—even if you don’t yet.

Jesus made it clear: the thief comes only to steal, kill, and destroy. But He didn’t stop there. He followed it with a promise: “...I have come that they may have life—and have it to the full.” John 10:10 (NIV)

God is not surprised by the enemy’s plans. And He’s already made provision to help you stand. You weren’t created to be a victim—you were called to be a victor.

But it starts by recognizing that you are in a battle. One that’s fought daily in your thoughts, your emotions, your relationships, and your choices. And the best way to win that battle? Step fully into the life God designed for you.

The enemy may know your potential—but today is the day you start believing it too.

Action Step

Write down the three strategies of the enemy:

  1. Take you out.
  2. Make you miserable and blame God.
  3. Make you ineffective for God.

Now write next to each one how you see that scheme playing out—or being defeated—in your own life. Pray for strength and clarity to recognize the enemy’s lies and stand in truth.

Reflection Questions

  1. How has the enemy tried to steal, kill, or destroy something in your life?
  2. What areas of your life feel most under attack—and what might that reveal about your calling?
  3. Where do you need to reject the enemy’s lies and receive God’s truth?
