God of the in Between

Was it true that there was a storm? Yes. Was it true that the winds were howling? Yes. Was it true that the boat was filling up with water? Yes. So the disciples, surrounded by the truth of their storm, went to Jesus. Luke 8 verse 24 tells us they “woke him, saying, ‘Master, Master, we’re going to drown!'” I don’t believe they politely tapped him on the shoulder and whispered softly, “Um, excuse me. We hate to wake you, but you might should get up because there’s a bit of rain up on the top deck.” No, I believe they frantically yelled and screamed, waking a peacefully sleeping, soon-to-be Savior of the world.

The same verse tells us Jesus’ response. He didn’t go back to bed. He didn’t roll his eyes and tell them to calm down. Jesus didn’t deny the storm, either. He didn’t say, “Eh, it’s just some wind.” He didn't deny what they saw or heard or felt. No. The verse says, “He got up and rebuked the winds and raging waters.” And when He did, the storm subsided, and all was calm.

God never demands we deny the storm. God never chastises us for feeling the rain or being blown by the wind. What God does do is remind us of His promises.

God of the in Between

Between jobs. Between relationships. Between the teenage years and adulthood. Between parenthood and an empty nest. Between where you want to be and where you are now. Or maybe you’re smack in between the prayer and the answer. No matter what the “in between” looks like for you, God is there. A God who loves without leaving. A God who empowers and equips. And, a God who is in the in between.
