# The “Mindset of Christ” in Paul (Philippians 1:1-26) "Now I want you to know, brothers and sisters, that what has happened to me has actually served to advance the gospel." Philippians 1:12 (NIV) ## Context The church at Philippi took great pride in the status of their city as a Roman colony. Watch the video to learn more about the situation that prompted Paul to write a letter to this church. ## Observation Paul begins his letter by letting the Philippians know how thankful he is for their partnership with him in the spread of the gospel (1:1-11). He then wants to make sure they know that his situation (in prison) has been used by God to advance the gospel in many ways: 1. the whole palace guard knows that he is in chains for Christ (1:12-13); 2. many believers have grown more confident to preach without fear (1:14); and 3. Paul’s imprisonment has even motivated his rivals to preach the gospel of Christ (1:15-17). Regardless of the motivation of its preachers, however, Paul rejoices that the true gospel is advancing (1:18). He reports his expectation of release from prison and an upcoming visit to Philippi. However, his ultimate prayer is that he will have courage to honor Christ in his body, whether by his life or his death (1:19-26). ## Interpretation Today’s background video described Philippi’s pride in their high status in the Roman Empire. As you read Philippians 1:1-26 for yourself, think about how Paul models for them a different kind of attitude. How would you describe the mindset Paul is demonstrating? From this passage, what seems to be most important to Paul? How does he disciple the Philippian church into sharing his views on what matters most? ## Application What does your cultural context tell you to value as most important in life? How does the mindset demonstrated by Paul challenge these values? Is there a specific response you can make to re-orient your priorities to those exampled by Paul rather than those dictated by culture?
