Isus a venit în Betania cu șase zile înainte de sărbătoarea Paștelor. Acolo era Lazăr care fusese mort și pe care îl înviase. I-au pregătit o cină. Marta era aceea care îi servea, iar Lazăr era unul dintre cei care stăteau la masă cu El. Maria a luat aproximativ o jumătate de litru de ulei parfumat curat făcut din nard, a uns picioarele lui Isus cu el și I le-a șters cu părul ei. Apoi mirosul acelui parfum s-a răspândit în toată casa. Unul dintre discipolii Lui, numit Iuda iscarioteanul – fiul lui Simon – care urma să Îl trădeze, a zis: „De ce nu s-a vândut acest ulei parfumat cu trei sute de dinari, pentru a da apoi săracilor banii obținuți astfel?” El a vorbit așa nu pentru că îngrijea de săraci, ci pentru că era un hoț. Fiind el cel care ținea punga, lua (pentru el) ce se punea în ea. Dar Isus a zis: „Las-o în pace, pentru că ea l-a păstrat pentru ziua înmormântări Mele.
