Know Jesus, Be Transformedਨਮੂਨਾ

Rich Toward God
Bank accounts. Safes. Lockers. We do whatever it takes to keep our money and valuables safe. We feel secure knowing our precious belongings are protected.
Jesus uses a parable to teach us about the right perspective on earthly possessions. A rich man tears down his barns to build bigger ones because his land yields an unexpected abundance of grain. Jesus calls this man a fool because he believes that by storing up earthly wealth for himself, he can eat, drink and be merry all the days of his life. Jesus’ question to this rich man highlights another reason for his folly: “You are going to die tonight. What will happen to all this excess grain?”
Jesus is not against riches, but He holds His followers to a higher standard. He narrates this parable to help us evaluate if our sense of security is wrongly placed in our earthly treasures. Are we putting our trust in our bank balances, which can change or vanish, rather than in God, who is sovereign and immutable? God is more than able to take care of our material needs and wants.
This parable also emphasizes the Christian’s unique perspective on life. Since we’re aware our lives extend to eternity, we can spend our short time on earth seeking and doing God’s will, investing in relationships, building up the church, and preaching the gospel. Prioritizing the pursuit of wealth and happiness over that of righteousness is mere foolishness and uncharacteristic of those who are part of God’s kingdom. Jesus encourages us to focus on what’s important and of eternal value—laying up treasures for ourselves in heaven.
