Water Into Wine

Jesus, His mother, and His disciples were guests at a wedding in Cana. When the host ran out of wine, Mary turned to Jesus for help. Jesus obliged and miraculously turned water into wine.

This miracle, recorded in the Gospel of John, was the first sign through which Jesus’ glory was revealed. Jesus did not touch the water or even go near it. He gave instructions to the servants to fill up the stone jars with water. The servants obeyed. Then, Jesus asked them to draw some water out and take it to the master of the banquet. They obeyed again. When the master tasted it, it had turned into the finest wine.

We do not know at what point the water had turned into wine but we can only imagine the servants’ surprise when the water that they had seen with their eyes and touched with their hands was no longer water, but wine. It certainly astounded the disciples, because John noted that they started believing in Jesus.

At Cana, Jesus demonstrated that if He had the power to change the nature and composition of water, then He was more than capable of changing the inclination of the hearts of men. Through this miracle, Jesus was making a big and bold statement—that He came to the earth to bring change. He came to change our lack to abundance, our mourning into joy, our weakness into strength, our bondage into freedom, and our death into life.

The regeneration and renewal that salvation brings in us is a miracle; a powerful testament to the power and authority of Jesus. More than any other miracle or sign, it is our changed lives that reveal His glory.
