TODAY’S STORY

In the Garden from Matthew 26:31-75; John 18:1-8

Note to the parents:

Even Jesus had “I don’t want to” moments. This can be comforting for children, and adults as well. Notice how Jesus deals with His feelings of not wanting to do something that His Father told Him to do.

Help your child recall the story by asking simple questions about what happened.

Examples:

• What did Jesus do in the garden?
• When the crowd came to arrest Jesus, what did He do?
• What did most of the disciples do? What about Peter?

Together, think about what you have learned. Invite your child to ask you the question. Encourage them to add their thoughts or fill in a blank when prompted.

What did we learn about GOD?

• God is always in control and always has a plan.
• His ways are not always easy, but they are always right and good.

What did we learn about JESUS?

• Jesus knew that being arrested would lead to terrible pain for Him.
• But He was willing to obey God the Father.
• He trusted His Father’s good plans.

What did we learn about PEOPLE?

• People can choose to trust and obey God.
• Sometimes it is really hard. But Jesus shows us how.

What do you want to say to God after reading this story? (Prayer)

God,

I know that Your plans for me are good.

Help me to say YES to what’s right, even when it’s hard.
(Name some occasions when it’s hard to trust and obey.)
