House of David, Season 2: Trusting God in the Middle of the Story

DAY 19 OF 30

No Compromise

Paul tells us a truth we see play out in the struggle within the heart of Saul. Saul allowed himself to compromise in his obedience, and in doing so, corrupted his soul.

God gave Saul specific instructions on how to make sacrifices and how to conquer the Israelites’ enemies. But time and again, Saul did instead what he thought made the most sense.

In the chapters of 1 Samuel before you get to the story of David and Goliath, you see the unraveling of a King and it’s completely self-inflicted. A little compromise here, and a little compromise there, and Saul’s whole reign is polluted. Did God expect perfection? No. But God did expect his heart. And whenever Saul was confronted, he justified his actions as doing what the people wanted.

Here’s what we can learn from King Saul: “What we allow, we become.”

God doesn’t demand perfection, but He does desire surrender. When Saul was confronted, he justified himself. And later, when we see David confronted with his wrongdoings, he repents. That’s the difference between compromise and contrition.

Sin grows in the soil of excuses. Righteousness grows in the soil of repentance. Don’t let small compromises corrode your soul. What you sow in secret will one day be reaped in public.

Reflection Question: Is there a compromise you’ve been excusing that God is calling you to confess?
