Worship in the Wreckage

Faith is rarely a smooth path. Sometimes it bends sharply into valleys we could never imagine. Job knew this well. He was a man with a loving family, wealth, and respect, yet in a sudden sweep, he lost everything: his children, his possessions, and his health. Friends questioned him, and he wrestled with the age-old question: “Why, God?”

Yet Job shows us that worship in the midst of suffering does not erase grief or mask sorrow. It is about holding on when life feels shattered, mourning honestly while refusing to turn away from the One who holds everything, even the ashes. In time, God restored Job, deepening his understanding of faith, endurance, and worship that rises from the ruins.

Centuries later, C.S. Lewis walked a valley of grief of his own. After losing his beloved wife, he described a hollow loneliness that consumed him. In A Grief Observed, he wrestles with doubt, anger, and confusion, yet he never abandons God. Through his struggle, Lewis discovered a faith that moves through sorrow, allowing grief to illuminate God’s love and the resilience of hope. Worship, he realised, is not just comfort. It is an act of courage in the face of heartache.

I have experienced a similar path. When God called us to move to Indonesia with my husband’s work, we expected adventure and new beginnings. Instead, we faced sorrow beyond our wildest imagination. Our young son became seriously ill, and we lost him. In those days, silence and questions weighed heavily. Friends, family, and even strangers could not fully comprehend our grief. I had a choice: deny the pain or trust God with the fragments of my broken heart. I chose trust.

Even in the shadow of grief, God scattered moments of wonder. He opened doors to travel, to witness the vastness of His creation, and to encounter cultures, cities, and landscapes that stretched the imagination and stirred the soul. From bustling streets to quiet mountain paths, from vibrant markets to serene beaches, each journey became a living classroom of His artistry. Life, even after loss, remained full of beauty and provision. We learned to notice subtle joys: sunrise over unfamiliar skylines, laughter shared across languages, and the quiet awe of nature that whispers of a God who holds all things.

Job, Lewis, and my own experience converge on a single truth: worship in the wreckage is not ignoring pain or pretending life is fair. It is recognising God’s faithfulness when sorrow weighs heavily, discovering pockets of joy amidst hardship, and trusting Him even when answers are delayed. Suffering can refine faith, deepen our intimacy with God, and transform heartbreak into a powerful testimony.

Even when despair creeps in, God remains. He meets us in the wreckage, strengthens our hearts, and whispers a quiet invitation to worship. Choosing to worship in hardship carries us through grief, doubt, and uncertainty toward restoration, hope, and the gentle celebration of life’s small wonders.
