You Are the Salt of the Earth
Throughout the Bible, salt carries deep spiritual and practical symbolism, representing preservation, purity, and covenant faithfulness. In Matthew 5:13 (NIV), Jesus tells His followers, “You are the salt of the earth”, highlighting that believers are called to preserve godly values in a world prone to moral decay. Salt was also used in sacrifices (Leviticus 2:13), symbolizing purity and the lasting covenant between God and His people. In Colossians 4:6 (NIV), Paul urges, “Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt,” showing that salt represents wisdom, kindness, and truth in how we communicate.
For everyday living, this means we as Christians are called to live as spiritual preservers in a world often dominated by division, immorality, and anxiety. Just as salt enhances flavor, our faith and actions should bring light, encouragement, and godly influence into homes, workplaces, and communities. Being “the salt of the earth” reminds us to guard against losing our spiritual distinctiveness, offering hope and integrity where corruption and compromise often thrive. In practical terms, living as salt means promoting peace, speaking truth in love, maintaining purity in choices, and pointing others to the eternal covenant of Christ in a fast-changing world.
If you find yourself physically craving salt, consider helping your adrenal glands, since this can be a sign of weak function. Your adrenals make hormones in the body, including cortisone. It’s important to consume real, quality salt, like Celtic Sea Salt. As we end today’s reading, ask God to show you how you can be “salt” to those who you come across in your daily life.
