Strengthened by Grace

DAY 22 OF 30

Think Over What I Say

Paul tells Timothy, “Think over what I say, for the Lord will give you understanding in everything” (2 Tm. 2:7 ESV). Have you ever had a parent or a leader say these words to you?

Consider Paul’s words in 1 Corinthians 15:10 ESV: “But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace toward me was not in vain. On the contrary, I worked harder than any of them, though it was not I, but the grace of God that is with me.” Paul was a superior soldier, world-class athlete, and premier farmer. His commitment to the gospel was absolute. He was given much grace and went full steam ahead, empowered and equipped with that grace.

Every Christian is a soldier, even if they are timid. Whatever our temperament, we cannot avoid earthly difficulties or spiritual resistance. Therefore, we must think through all Paul is saying. Let us ready ourselves and gird our minds for action. Drastic measures are necessary to be dedicated, devoted, diligent, and disciplined! We must rid ourselves of everything and anything that entangles or distracts us!

Consider grace and hard work. How do they go together? How do we live this out practically? Read the instructions in 1 Peter 1:13-22 and Hebrews 12:1-6.

Note what you learn about God’s grace and our responsibility. We want to work hard as good stewards of the amazing grace we have been given and build upon the foundation of Christ.

What do you need to do first in order to be ready and able to be a good soldier, athlete, or hardworking farmer?

Where are you most vulnerable to doubt or fear?

What do you need to do to gird your mind?

What weighs you down that you need to lay aside?

What besetting sin do you need to put to death?

Praise be to God, we do not need to address these things alone or in our own strength! Remember Paul’s words of encouragement to Timothy, “Be strengthened by the grace that is in Christ Jesus” (2 Tm. 2:1 ESV). Ask the Lord to meet you right where you are. He will be with you as you think over what Paul has said and help give you understanding if you ask Him.

About this Plan

Strengthened by Grace

Paul is in dire circumstances, yet remains unwavering in his faith. While writing to Timothy from prison, he encourages him to draw strength from the grace found only in Christ. Paul reminds Timothy—and all of us—that God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-discipline. May this plan from 2 Timothy chapters 1-3 inspire and strengthen you as you seek to remain steadfast and guard the gospel.
