The Days of Awe - the Path of Return to God

DAY 3 OF 4

The Rectification of the World

The Days of Awe are a time for reconciliation not only with God, but also with one's neighbor. Judaism teaches that forgiveness for transgressions between people can only be obtained by asking for forgiveness directly from the offended, and not just from God. It is a time for Tikkun Olam, the "rectification of the world," through acts of justice and charity.

This tradition has a solid biblical basis. The prophets of the Old Testament cried out for justice, mercy, and love. Micah reminds us that we should practice justice, love mercy, and walk humbly with God. However, the basis for fulfilling this call is not our search for a forgiveness we cannot guarantee, but rather the overflow of Christ's grace in our lives. The Messiah not only forgives us but empowers us to love our neighbor and seek justice.

Personal Application: Reconciliation with your brother is fundamental to your relationship with God. Is there someone in your life with whom you need to reconcile? Take the initiative and seek forgiveness, not as a work to be saved, but as a fruit of Christ's love in your heart.

Call to Intercession: Pray that the Jewish people, as they seek reconciliation and justice, will find the source of all forgiveness and love in the Messiah. May they understand that the final Tikkun Olam will be carried out by the King, Jesus.
