The Days of Awe - the Path of Return to God

DAY 2 OF 4

The Book of Life

Rabbinic tradition teaches that on Rosh Hashanah God opens the Book of Life and the Book of Death, and in the 10 days that follow, people's destinies are decided, being sealed on Yom Kippur. It is a time of great anxiety, as the Jewish people seek to qualify to be inscribed in the Book of Life through prayer, fasting, and charity.

The Bible speaks clearly about a Book of Life. However, its sealing is not annual, but is guaranteed by the work of the Messiah. In Revelation, the Book of Life is the record of those whose names have been written "from the foundation of the world," not by their works, but by the sacrifice of the Lamb. Jesus frees us from the anxiety of judgment and gives us the assurance of salvation.

Personal Application: Are you sure that your name is in the Book of Life? The Word of God guarantees us that if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. Live today with the security of a name inscribed for eternity.

Call to Intercession: Pray that the Jewish people, as they seek God's forgiveness and seal on Yom Kippur, will understand that the true Book of Life is sealed in Jesus, the Messiah, the only one who can guarantee eternal life.
