Running Life's Race on God's Team

DAY 2 OF 6

God is our Crew Chief

The crew chief is the race team’s strategist and decision-maker. He is responsible for the car’s setup and the race strategy, along with pit crew communication, and leading the team in critical decisions throughout the race. Without a crew chief that understands the driver, the tracks, and what it takes to win, victory is not possible. When we think about our lives, they are a race, and we want to live victoriously, both now and in eternity. Therefore, we try to call the best strategy for our lives. We make our own decisions: where to work, who to date, our priorities, our social activities, and more. Without consulting anyone else or asking God, we become our own crew chief. But how can the driver also be the crew chief? The driver is focused on his or her own race, and not the big picture of what’s going on around him. The crew chief sees what other drivers are doing and can adjust his own strategy to emerge victorious. If the driver tries to both drive and strategize on his or her own, it will be a disaster. Crew chiefs are essential in racing and in life, and God is the best crew chief to have in life’s race.

Throughout Scripture, we see the difference between making our own plans and God’s plans. One of the best examples of this is the story of Joseph. Joseph’s plan for his life almost certainly did not include betrayal from his brothers, slavery in Egypt, false accusations, and imprisonment. However, throughout the race of his life, God never left him. He worked everything out at just the right time, and he used Joseph’s gift of interpreting dreams to place him in a position of power and influence. Ultimately, he saved the entire country and region from a terrible famine. Joseph recognized that what his brothers had planned to be evil and punishing, as they were the ones who sold him into Egyptian slavery, God meant for good (see Genesis 50:20). God was the crew chief in Joseph’s life, and he wants to be the crew chief in yours as well.

In other parts of Scripture, we are wisely told that God’s plans are higher than ours and better than ours. Our lives are like a mist; even though the race seems long to us, life really is short. When we make our own plans, we limit how far we can advance in our life’s race. When we trust in God’s plans and make him our crew chief, we can live a life of meaning, purpose, victory, and fulfillment. God is the ultimate life strategist, and he knows what is best for you. Will you choose to let him be your crew chief?

About this Plan

Running Life's Race on God's Team

Racing and following Jesus have many parallels. In the end, both lead to victory! This plan explores living a victorious life in Christ by comparing how he works in our lives with a motorsport team. This plan is a great way to explain what it means to follow Jesus and his life-changing work to a race fan. We were not meant to run this race of life on our own. Running life's race on God's team can lead us to victory through Christ!
