“30 Pictures of Jesus” 30 Day Plan

DAY 9 OF 30

Today we see Jesus as the Branch.

The Bible often describes God’s people like a tree. In Eden, Adam was planted like a tree of life, meant to bear fruit and spread God’s peace and justice throughout the world. But instead of flourishing, Adam and Eve withered. Their rebellion twisted the human family tree so that it bore only the fruit of sin and death.

Later, God planted Israel in the land like a vine (Isaiah 5:1–7). He wanted them to grow in righteousness, spread shade and life, and bear fruit for the nations. But Israel became wild and corrupt, producing only bad fruit. Their kings were no better. Though God raised up David, Israel’s greatest king, even David’s descendants failed. The royal family tree of Jesse, David’s father, was reduced to what looked like a lifeless stump. Yet Isaiah promised, “A shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse; from his roots a Branch will bear fruit” (Isaiah 11:1).

Jeremiah takes up that same promise. Looking at Israel’s corrupt rulers, he declared: “The days are coming… when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch, a King who will reign wisely and do what is just and right in the land” (Jeremiah 23:5). Out of Jesse’s broken line, God would bring forth a new shoot. Unlike Israel’s failed kings and fruitless branches, this King would grow straight and true. His reign would be so full of life that people would remember it even more than God’s mighty rescue in the exodus (Jeremiah 23:7–8).

When Jesus came, he fulfilled this vision. He is the Branch from Jesse’s stump, the Son of David who reigns in righteousness. Israel was a vine that failed to bear fruit, symbolized in Jesus’ cursing of the barren fig tree (Mark 11:12–14). But Jesus is the true tree who does bear fruit—the Branch who finally flourishes where Adam, Israel, and David’s line had failed. He healed the sick, proclaimed justice, and spread life wherever he went. And on the cross, brought the fruit of life from the most fruitless tree of death.

In his resurrection, Jesus has begun the reign Jeremiah foresaw. The Branch has grown into the tree of life, bearing fruit that will one day cover the earth. And all who belong to him will flourish in his kingdom forever.
