The Single Mom Journey

DAY 1 OF 10

Day 1: Let's Talk about God

When I was growing up, my parents always made sure we went to Sunday School and church. It didn’t matter if we had stayed up late the night before—church was a non-negotiable. Those early experiences gave me a belief in God, but it wasn’t until I became an adult that I truly understood what it meant to have a relationship with Jesus Christ.

In 1975, at the age of 24, I got married. Not long after our wedding, my husband and I relocated from my small hometown in central Pennsylvania to his hometown of Las Vegas, Nevada. The move overwhelmed me. I was homesick, nervous, and unsure of what life would look like in a big city. What I didn’t realize was that this move would lead to the most important decision of my life.

Soon after we arrived in Las Vegas, my mother-in-law, a devout Christian, insisted that I attend church with her. Eventually, I agreed to attend a revival service. That night, we sang a song I’ll never forget: “Heaven Came Down and Glory Filled My Soul.” And for the first time, I truly experienced what those words meant.

During the service, I came face to face with the truth: I was a sinner, lost and separated from God. I realized that just going to church, like I had done as a child, wasn’t enough. I needed a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. That night, after the sermon, I walked to the front and made the most important decision of my life—I asked Jesus to come into my heart and save me.

From that moment on, I’ve had peace in knowing that when I die, I will spend eternity in Heaven, not because of anything I’ve done, but because of what Jesus did for me.

Friend, you also have a choice about where you will spend eternity. If you have never accepted Jesus Christ as your personal Savior, I invite you to turn the page and read the steps in the Challenge section.

This is the most important decision you will ever make.

Day 1: Challenge

God will never leave you and He will never forsake you (Hebrews 13:5). All you must do is accept His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, as your personal Savior. John 3:16 above shows that God loved us so much that He made a way for us to go to Heaven by sending His only begotten Son. The following verses will show you how to accept this free gift that He is offering to you:

1. You must realize that you are a sinner. Have you ever lied, cheated, used a curse word, or disrespected your elder? If so, then you have sinned before, and admitting you are a sinner is the first step. Every person has sinned.

Romans 3:23 (NKJV): "For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God."

2. The punishment for your sin is eternal death in Hell.

Romans 6:23a (NKJV): "For the wages of sin is death."

3. Out of God’s love for us, He sent His Son to die for our sins. This is our hope, through Christ we can be saved from an eternal death.

Romans 5:8 (NKJV): "But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: while we were still sinners, Christ died for us."

4. God’s gift is eternal life in Heaven through Jesus Christ

Romans 6:23b (NKJV): "but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord."

5. You can accept the gift of eternal life by faith in Jesus. Confess your sin and rely on Jesus alone for your salvation.

Romans 10:13 (NKJV): "For everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved."

6. By calling him Lord, we are saying that we will follow him and his ways and his teachings. Of course, we fail far more often than we would like, but this is where a relationship becomes so important.

Romans 10:9 (NKJV): "If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead you will be saved."

If you're ready to accept Christ as your Savior, you can pray something like this from your heart:

Suggested Prayer:
Dear Lord Jesus, I know that I am a sinner. I am sorry for my sins. I believe that You are God and that You died for my sins. I believe You rose from the dead, proving that You are the only way to Heaven. Right now, as best as I know how, I ask You to forgive me of my sins and to be my Lord and Savior. Thank You for loving me and for saving me. Help me to live for You from this day forward. Amen.

If you just prayed that prayer and meant it, welcome to God’s family! You now have a Heavenly Father who will walk with you every step of the way.

This is the most important step you could ever take—and the beginning of a brand-new journey.
