Raising Children in a Godly Home
As parents, we are given the incredible responsibility and privilege of raising our children in a spiritual home: a home where God’s Word is central, where prayer is a natural part of daily life, and where the love of Christ permeates every room. Reflect on the spiritual atmosphere of your home. Does it feel like a place where the Holy Spirit dwells? A spiritual home is not perfect, but it is a place where grace, forgiveness, love, and truth are pursued every day.
Building a godly home begins with you. As the parent, you set the tone for the household. How often do you pray with your children? How frequently do you read God’s Word together? Does worship music play? Do you have fun, make memories, and practice for Heaven by pursuing joy as a family? Are your conversations filled with encouragement, or do they often turn to criticism or complaint? A spiritual home is not just about what you say but what you do. Let your children see you live out your faith in practical ways—through acts of kindness, service, and humility. Remember, children learn more from what they observe than from what they are told because they imitate our habits (good and bad) from a young age.
One of the most powerful ways to build a spiritual home is to develop family traditions that honor God. This could be a weekly family prayer time, a nightly Bible reading, or serving together in a local ministry. Traditions help instill values and make faith a regular part of life. Involve your children in creating a spiritual atmosphere. Ask them how they want to engage in prayer or Bible study. Let them choose a worship song for family worship time or pick a verse to memorize as a family.
After the worst season of our family’s entire lives, we took a break from church and couldn’t attend church regularly for a season. I (Mark) want to honor my wife and kids, as they’re the strongest people I know, because, instead of becoming bitter or drifting away from their faith, they decided to create our own worship services at home on Sundays. Each family member took a role: one kid helped with worship, another read Scripture, another took prayer requests, and the youngest even decided to “collect the offering” with the idea of giving it to a single mom in need. I was honored that they nominated me to be the Bible teacher.
This experience was incredible because, even though we couldn’t gather with God’s people, we could be God’s people for each other. It wasn’t about being connected to a church in this temporary season; it was about raising children who knew how to serve, love, and grow in their relationships with God, even outside of a traditional church setting.
We kept this arrangement for a short season. Some months later, we moved to Arizona, and it was our kids’ idea to plant a church and carry forth the same values we had at our little family church. Their vision and hard work became Trinity Church, where we all serve Jesus together. Our church literally started with our kids wanting to do ministry together as a family!
Remember, raising children in a spiritual home is a journey, not a destination. It requires daily commitment, patience, and reliance on God’s grace. Trust that He is at work in your family, even when you don’t see immediate results.
Dear Lord, help me to build a spiritual home where Your presence is felt and honored. Guide me as I lead my family in faith, and give me the wisdom to create an environment that nurtures their spiritual growth. Let our home be a beacon of Your love and grace. In Jesus' name, Amen.
