Parenting on Point

DAY 1 OF 21

Loving God with All Your Heart

Parenting often brings with it a roller coaster of emotions. From the overwhelming joy of a newborn to the challenges of disciplining a teenager, our hearts are tested daily. But God calls us to love Him with our whole heart, allowing His love to shape our responses, reactions, and relationships.

The good news is that our God loves us, and our relationship with Him begins with His love. 1 John 4:10 (ESV) says, “In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.”

Our hearts represent our emotional life, the seat of our passions, desires, and deepest feelings. So, to love God with all our heart means bringing every emotion, joy, sorrow, desire, and ambition into alignment with His will. True love is not merely an emotion but a decision to care for and serve others, especially in challenging moments.

Let’s meditate on loving God emotionally, even in the chaos of family life. A heart turned toward God becomes a wellspring of love for others, starting with our spouse and then our children. The emotions you feel as a parent—frustration, anger, exhaustion—are real, but they are also opportunities to rely on God’s grace and strength. He understands the depths of our hearts, having created them, and He wants us to invite Him into every aspect of our emotional life.

I realized that loving God with all my heart was the key to everything else.

Think of your heart like a cup and your child as the one who keeps bumping it. Whatever’s in your heart—fear, anger, bitterness—will spill out when they mess up. That’s not their fault; it’s a mirror of what’s already inside.

God wants to fill your heart with love so that when you're bumped, love and grace come out. That’s how the Holy Spirit helps us correct and lead with patience, not pressure. Kids can sense what’s really going on with us. When we’re filled with God’s love, we show them Jesus, especially in hard moments.

So today, let’s invite the Holy Spirit to help us love our families well. When you’re tempted to react out of anger or impatience, pause and ask:

Dear Heavenly Father, I thank you for loving me with all your heart. I ask You to help me love You with all my heart. Teach me to guard my heart and to trust in Your love even when emotions run high. Fill me with Your peace so that I may pour it into my family today. In Jesus' name, Amen.
