There are many times in our lives when we feel like God is not listening to us or hearing our prayers. Maybe we feel stuck in the bondage we are in, and our prayers to be free feel like they go unanswered or unheard. The Israelites felt the same way during their time in Egypt. They were in Egypt for 430 years. Once the freedom they had prayed for finally came, it was met with fear and regret. They wished that they had stayed in Egypt in their bondage. Their captivity seemed comfortable in hindsight. But if they had gone back, they would have missed the Promised Land and the purpose God had for them as a people. We experience this same thing; the Exodus is mirrored in the New Testament with Christ being our liberator from sin. In the same way that the Israelites are taken out of oppression, we too can be freed from what binds us. Yet in the same way, looking back, our oppression can look comfortable just like it did for the Israelites.
We can look back on what we have been set free from and want to go back. We quickly forget the pain and suffering brought by the bondage we were held in. We revise our history to say that we felt better then, when deep down we know the hurt and pain we were feeling. In the same way, the Israelites looked back on 400 years of slavery and preferred it to the freedom they had just gained. They remembered the comfort and not the pain. They were met with difficulty and wanted to run back to what they were comfortable with. We, however, have to trust that God’s path, even when it is faced with difficulties, is so much greater than the bondages that we have been freed from. When the freedom you were unleashed into is met with difficulty, trust that God unleashed you for a reason and a purpose. Spend time and sit with God. Look back and see what He has freed you from, and remind yourself of the purpose He has freed you for.
