7 Devotions to Help You Discover God’s Restorative Power

DAY 3 OF 7

Imperfect But Loved

"God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil." GENESIS 3:5 NIV

Back in the book of Genesis, Adam and Eve lived in a beautiful garden where all of their needs were met, and they didn’t know anything about evil. They were in perfect harmony with God and each other. There was no conflict, just one simple command from God: Do not eat of the tree of knowledge of good and evil. But the serpent slyly tricked Eve, and she ate the fruit of the tree, and after that Adam did too. They then knew of both good and evil. However, God still loved them, despite their disobedience.

As you take a look at your own story and that of your family, you can see that we are all products of imperfect people. We can often feel, too, past wounds that never healed but were maybe just sealed up or buried. As our own eyes open to knowing what’s good and what’s evil, God can help us stop generational pains as He shows us how they have affected us and how they may be starting to affect the next generation.

Remember, God can exchange pain for glory. While we can’t go back to our own past (or the lives of those before us) and change things, we can decide how we choose to live today. God loves you, even in your questioning, even in your darkest moments. He wants you to draw nearer to Him.

As you look to God for restoration, pray for Him to reveal what needs light shed on it. Whether things from the past or recent occurrences, ask Him to show you what needs healing. There may be more than one thing or area, but take heart and know that none of us is perfect. Close your eyes and lay those places that need healing at God’s feet. Decide with a full heart to give Him any and all of the pain that you hold, and with faith, believe that He’s working in and through it. After all, who better to care for and heal your heart than your Creator?
