The Power of Community - Vol. 1: In Times of Grief

DAY 3 OF 3

Day 3: Growing Bitter or Better?

It's easy to observe other people's life situations and assume we know what they should have done in their difficult circumstances. When we read about Naomi's life, we could just as easily glaze over the fact that she was absolutely devastated when we were first introduced to her. She had lost nearly everything in her world: her husband, her sons, her financial stability, and her standing within the community. To top it all off, her identity was also radically changed.

While you may not directly relate to the troubles she faced, perhaps you've felt devastated due to your life circumstances. Or, better yet, you may have felt mischaracterized, as others may not have understood your grieving process. I've come to realize that each of our situations is unique, but our shared relationship with God not only draws us closer to one another but also aligns us with God's purposes as we seek His presence. While Naomi, who referred to herself as Mara, meaning "bitter," could not see what lay ahead, she knew one thing: returning home to her people would be better for her. Yet, even with the opportunity to go back home, she still felt utterly forsaken.

Have you ever considered that the words "bitter" and "better" differ by just one letter? Just as one letter can alter the meaning of a word, so too can one decision change the course of our lives, shifting us from bitterness to betterment. We may not have all the answers, but in God's sovereignty, He can transform our bitter moments into opportunities for healing and greater joy when we make different choices. Be of good courage, new horizons are in the distance. In the midst of the devastation Naomi and Ruth faced, the harvest was beginning (Ruth 1:22).

Prayer:

Lord, help us remember that you know the beginning from the end. Help us when we are in the middle of our trials to remember that you are faithful. You work all things for our good, even in the midst of devastation. Give us eyes to see, ears to hear, and hearts to understand your will and your word in the Name of Jesus, Amen.
