Fear is an Enemy
Psalm 27:1The Lord is my light and my salvation— whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life—of whom shall I be afraid? (NIV)
Fear is an enemy of worship. Fear is a worship thief. It sneaks into the sanctuary of our hearts and subtly shifts our focus from God’s greatness to our own weakness. It magnifies problems and minimizes God’s promises. And if left unchecked, fear will silence praise, stifle trust, and keep us from living in the freedom that true worship offers.
David, the author of Psalm 27, was no stranger to danger or distress. He faced real enemies, betrayal, and moments of terrifying uncertainty. Yet he begins this psalm with a declaration of defiant faith: “Whom shall I fear?” This isn’t denial of danger—it’s a declaration that fear will not have the final word. Notice how David responds to fear: not by retreating, but by worshiping. Verse 4 reveals his heart’s desire: “One thing I ask from the Lord… that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze on the beauty of the Lord and to seek Him in His temple.”
Worship, for David, wasn’t just something he did when life was easy—it was his weapon in the face of fear. He understood that when we behold God’s beauty, the shadows of fear begin to dissipate. Worship reminds us who God is: our light, our salvation, our stronghold. In His presence, fear shrinks.
The lens through which we see things is vital, and the spirit we carry is critical to our response to honoring God: Fear says: “Look at how big the problem is.” Worship says: “Look at how big my God is.” Fear says: “I don’t know what will happen.” Worship says: “I know Who holds my future.” Fear paralyzes. Worship propels.
David concludes the psalm with a final charge: “Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord.” (v. 14) This is a call to trust, to keep worshiping, and to let courage rise in the presence of God. This is a reminder to wait and take some time to reflect on these questions: What fears are currently trying to steal your worship? How can you shift your focus from fear to faith? What would it look like to “gaze on the beauty of the Lord” in your daily life?
