The Book of Psalms (30-Day Journey)

DAY 2 OF 30

The God Who is Above All - Yet Near to Us

Psalm 8:1 "O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!" (NIV)

The stretch from Psalm 8 to Psalm 14 forms a powerful and honest picture of the nature of God: His glory above the heavens, His care for humanity, His holiness that exposes human sin, and His faithfulness to redeem. As we walk through these chapters, we find not just theological truths about who God is, but invitations to live differently because of them.

Psalm 8 opens and closes like a song with the same breathtaking chorus: a declaration of God’s majesty. The heavens declare His glory, and every corner of creation whispers His name. Stars flung into space, oceans roaring with power, mountains standing immovable—all of it proclaims the greatness of our God. And yet, nestled in the middle of this psalm is a question so deeply human, it arrests us: “What is man that you are mindful of him, and the son of man that you care for him?” (Psalm 8:4 NIV) The Psalmist marvels—not just at the scope of the universe, but at the miracle of divine attention. Why would the God who sculpted Saturn’s rings and orchestrated the flight of galaxies even notice us? Yet He does. Not only notice, but care.

This is the beautiful paradox of Psalm 8: God is both transcendent and immanent. He reigns far above the highest heavens, seated in unapproachable light, surrounded by glory we can scarcely imagine. And yet—He stoops low. He enters into our smallness, our dust-formed lives, with compassion and care. He is not distant or detached; He is present, attentive, near. The One who set galaxies in motion also numbers the hairs on our heads and hears the quiet cries of our hearts.

David’s question—“What is man that You are mindful of him?”—is not asked from a place of despair or worthlessness. It's the stunned whisper of a soul struck by grace. He is not devaluing humanity; he is highlighting the wonder that the God of the universe would value us so highly. The awe comes from realizing that our Creator, who could exist perfectly without us, has instead chosen to draw near, to care, to dignify us with purpose.

The psalm goes even further. Not only does God see us—He exalts us. He crowns us with glory and honor, giving us a role in His created world. We are stewards of His handiwork, reflections of His image. In a universe filled with wonders, He chooses us to bear His likeness. We are not insignificant; we are not forgotten. We are chosen, commissioned, and deeply loved.

When you feel small or unseen, remember Psalm 8. The same God who names the stars also knows your name. The same hands that shaped the universe are gently guiding your life. Choose to worship today not only because He is majestic, but because He is mindful of you. We should practice gratitude for God’s attention to his creation. Throughout the day, when you’re tempted to feel overlooked or unimportant, remember Psalm 8:4. Write the verse on a sticky note, keep it in your car, or set it as a phone reminder. Let these words of God serve as a prompt to thank Him that He is ever mindful of you.
