When I think about being a father, one of the most profound moments in my life was when I held my son for the first time. The moment I saw his face, I knew everything had changed. It was more than biology; it was identity, legacy, and love. He was my son. And as his father, I had a responsibility to reflect the love, protection, and leadership of God to him.

In the same way, Jesus modeled the perfect sonship. In Matthew 3:17, as Jesus was baptized, the Father declared from heaven, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased" (ESV). Jesus' identity, purpose, and value were all rooted in His relationship with His Father. He was not seeking approval but lived from the security of His identity as the Son. This was true for every aspect of His life.

Jesus showed us that sonship is about relationship, trust, and obedience. His purpose was rooted in fulfilling the Father's will, even in the face of hardship. In John 4:34, Jesus declares, “My food is to do the will of Him who sent me,” (ESV) and in Matthew 26:39, He surrenders His will to the Father with, “Not as I will, but as You will” (ESV).

As sons of God through faith in Jesus Christ, we are invited into the same relationship. Jesus made it possible for us to be called sons of God (John 1:12-13, ESV). This new identity gives us purpose, belonging, and access to the Father’s love and provision. We no longer need to strive for approval because in Christ, we are already loved and accepted.

Reflect today on your identity as a son of God. You are secure in His love. You are not defined by your successes or failures but by your relationship with your Heavenly Father. Live in that truth, and let it shape how you love, serve, and lead those around you.

Challenge

Take time this week to meditate on the truth that you are a son of God. Spend time in prayer with your Heavenly Father. Trade striving for trust and rest in His provision.

Prayer

Father, thank You for calling me Your son. Help me to walk in this identity every day. Teach me to trust You, to live with purpose, and to reflect Your love. I am Your son. Amen.

The Man We Needed

Jesus, the perfect Son, lived out His identity, purpose, and obedience. He showed us what it means to belong to the Father. He was the Son we needed, and by God’s grace, we are sons too.
