Giant, It's Time for You to Come Down!

DAY 1 OF 5

Day 1: Tips From a Giant Killer

Are you facing a giant right now? Maybe it’s fear or lack of finances. Maybe it’s something going on in your family or at work. Maybe it’s a relationship problem. This giant could be anything, and it just stares you down and dares you to do anything about it. We all face giants in our lives, but I want you to know that you have giant-killing faith on the inside of you, and today, I want to share some tips with you from the original giant killer, David.

Tip 1: Turn Away from Opposition

If you’re going to be a giant killer, you’ve got to know how to stand against opposition, because it will come. The first opposition David faced was from his oldest brother, Eliab, someone that he probably looked up to. When David said that he was going to take down Goliath, Eliab got angry and told him, “David, you’re being prideful and insolent. You’re just here to peek at the battle.”

Opposition can come from the most painful places, but David knew that he didn’t have to argue with Eliab or be hurt by his words, so he just turned away. Not everybody's going to believe in your vision or your dream, but when they try to discourage you or put you down, sometimes you just have to turn away.

Tip 2: Imagine Victory

Now, I want to talk to you a little bit about your imagination, because if you worry while you are facing your giants, you’re using your imagination to visualize all the bad things that might happen, and that is not going to bring victory.

When everyone around David doubted him, even the King, David said simply, “I am able. By God’s power, I killed a lion and a bear, and now I’m going to kill this Philistine.” David imagined victory. In his mind, that giant was already defeated. David described exactly what he was going to do and how he was going to win, and with that goal in mind, he went out and did it.

Tip 3: Don’t Use Someone Else’s Answer

Maybe you’re trying to face your giant the way you saw somebody else do it, but it’s not working like you thought it would. Well, maybe that’s part of God’s plan. King Saul gave David his own armor to wear, and it was beautiful, strong armor, but it didn’t fit David. If David had tried to fight in that armor, he would have been tripping all over himself, and he wouldn’t have been able to fight Goliath. So, he took it right off.

God is so personal, friend, and He has a plan of victory just for you, so He doesn’t want you to look at what everyone else did. He wants you to come straight to Him, and He’ll give you armor that fits just right.

Tip 4: Choose the Right Name

Friend, the name that you choose to trust in is very important. When David entered the battlefield, Goliath started mocking and threatening him, but David announced that he came in the name of the Lord. David didn’t believe in his own name or Saul’s name or anyone else’s but in God’s name.

The Bible says that that name is above every other name. It has power over all principalities, power, dominion, and might, and you and I have been given that name, so we’d better come at our giants trusting in that name. Friend, this is so important because it doesn’t matter how hard we fight against our giants if we don’t do it in God’s name.

Questions to Discuss:

  1. Have you ever faced opposition from someone you cared about? How did you walk through that opposition and into God’s plan for you
  2. What is a battle you are in the middle of right now? Take a moment to imagine what victory in that area would look like and present that imagined victory to God.
  3. What is an area where you might be wearing someone else’s armor right now? What is an area where you embraced God’s personal answer to your problem? Take a moment to consider how you can turn to Him in your life today.
