Praying for Your Children’s Future: A 5-Day Devotional for Parents & Guardians by Tola Olabiyiਨਮੂਨਾ

Sowing Good Seeds
Scripture: Galatians 6:7 (NIV)
“Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows.”
Even as we trust God with our children’s futures, we must also act on that trust. This active partnership can be likened to sowing seeds—seeds of The Word, prayer, faith, kindness, wisdom, and love that will one day produce a bountiful harvest. Galatians 6:7 reminds us that there is a direct connection between what we plant now and what will grow later. John Wesley and his brother, Charles, were famous evangelists whose spiritual journeys were largely shaped by their mother’s faithful instruction and prayer. Susanna Wesley had ten children and, despite her busy life, devoted at least two hours each day to prayer and fellowship with them. Though one may not be able to replicate the exact same routine, her commitment to Sunday School, Bible reading, and prayer left a powerful legacy. Susanna’s consistent sowing reaped a harvest that impacted countless lives, even hundreds of years later.
Sowing good seeds is more than just quoting Bible verses at our children. It’s about how we live out those verses in front of them. Our attitudes, the way we handle conflict, and how we speak about others all communicate what we truly believe. If we say, “God is love,” but show constant anger or unrelenting criticism, that seed of love may not grow strong in the child’s heart.
When I consider practical ways to sow good seeds, I think of daily prayers—asking God to bless my children, protect them, and guide them in making wise decisions. I also consider asking questions that prompt them to reflect on their actions and words, and modeling forgiveness by choosing to let go of offenses rather than harbor grudges. Even a simple act of offering encouraging words can nourish a child’s soul, assuring them of their value and identity in Christ.
God calls us to be intentional in our actions because these small moments have eternal significance. Each act of kindness or demonstration of faith is like a seed planted in the fertile ground of a child’s heart. Over time, these seeds grow into habits, character traits, and convictions that shape the way they view themselves and the world around them.
We also need to remember that seeds take time to grow. We may not see immediate results. There could be moments when our children seem indifferent or even rebellious. Yet, as Galatians 6:7 reminds us, we will reap what we sow in due season. Our job is to keep sowing, keep watering through prayer, and trust God for the harvest.
- Reflection: What “good seeds” have you planted in your children recently? How can you be more intentional and consistent in your words and actions?
- Prayer: “Heavenly Father, help me to sow good seeds in my children’s lives every day. Let my words, actions, and attitudes align with Your Word, and may these seeds bear fruit and become a mighty harvest for Your glory in Jesus’ name.”
