Praying for Your Children’s Future: A 5-Day Devotional for Parents & Guardians by Tola Olabiyi

DAY 1 OF 5

God Has a Plan for Your Children

Scripture: Jeremiah 29:11 (NIV)

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

Have you ever sensed that your child was created for something more? Do you believe that there’s a calling on their life that goes far beyond the everyday routines of homework and playdates? The truth is, God has a unique plan and purpose for each of them, one that may involve ministry, leadership, entrepreneurship, the arts, or any number of fields. Perhaps you’ve felt this stirring in your heart, but weren’t sure how to nurture it. You’re not alone.

It’s so easy to get caught up in the day-to-day demands of life—work, carpooling, homework assignments, and meal planning—that we lose sight of the greater calling God has for our children. Yet, in Jeremiah 29:11, God reminds us that He already has good plans in store for them. His vision for their lives extends far beyond what we can see today, and He has called them for a purpose we might not fully comprehend.

As a parent, I’ve come to realize that I’m not just raising children; I’m shaping destinies. Whether my children are biological, adopted, or under my care in some other capacity, each one has a God-given purpose. They might be the next generation of entrepreneurs, pastors, artists, educators, or community leaders. Only God truly knows the breadth of their calling, and He allows me to partner with Him in guiding them.

Reflecting on this verse, I’m reassured that God’s plans are not meant to harm our children but to prosper them and give them a hopeful future. That doesn’t mean their path will be without challenges. Sometimes, God uses trials to build character. Other times, He may allow obstacles to refine us all or teach us dependence on Him. But the ultimate message is clear: God has good intentions for our children.

There have been moments when I’ve let exhaustion, stress, or personal circumstances overshadow my spiritual responsibilities. Yet, each time, God reminds me that my calling as a parent is to be obedient to His leading, even when it’s inconvenient. Nurturing children in faith goes beyond words; it involves daily choices and consistent efforts that align with God’s desire for their lives.

Embracing God’s promise in Jeremiah 29:11 also brings a sense of peace. I don’t have to map out every detail of my children’s future or shoulder the entire burden of their success. My role is to pray, nurture, and trust that God, who holds the blueprint of their lives, is working in ways I cannot see.

Today, let’s remember that God’s plans for our children are truly for good, whether they are toddlers, teens, or young adults. Their ultimate destiny rests in His hands, and our part is to remain faithful, pray fervently, and be open to the Holy Spirit’s guidance as we watch His plan unfold in their lives.

  • Reflection: In what ways have you seen God’s plans unfolding in your child’s life, even if only in small hints?
  • Prayer: “Father Lord, thank You for the good plans You have for my children. I pray that You reveal Your purposes to them, guide my steps as I nurture them, and help me trust You more each day.”
