Day 4: Standing in the Gap
“And his sister stood afar off, to know what would be done to him…”
—Exodus 2:4 (NKJV)
In this passage, we meet another hero in Moses’ story—his sister, Miriam. When her mother placed him on the river in a basket of reeds, Miriam stood watch. She didn’t turn away. She didn’t walk off. She stood, waited, and when the moment came, she intervened.
This is a picture of intercession.
As parents, we must raise siblings to be watchers over one another, not rivals. Sibling friendship matters. Miriam didn’t just stand by in silence. She spoke up. She offered a solution. Her voice led Moses back into the arms of the very mother who had birthed him, under Pharaoh’s protection. What a powerful result of watching and interceding!
In today's world, it is not good for our children to grow in isolation. We must encourage godly sibling bonds and Christ-centered friendships. Let them see the value in watching out for one another, praying for each other, and speaking life over their friends and siblings.
As parents and future parents, God is calling us to stand in the gap—to intercede, guide, and direct the arrows He has placed in our quiver. Every child is a potential deliverer, a voice of change, a kingdom ambassador. Our role is to see them, guard and guide them, and send them forth with confidence.
Let us be like Moses’ mother, with discernment. Let us be like Miriam, with watchful love. Let us be like Pharaoh’s daughter, with compassion. And above all, let us be parents after God’s heart, raising children for His kingdom.
Prayer:
Our Father in heaven, thank You for the gift of children and the sacred assignment to raise them for Your glory. Teach us to guide them with wisdom, watch over them with discernment, and intercede for them faithfully. Help us to foster unity and godly love among siblings and friends. Let our homes be filled with children who stand in the gap for one another and grow strong in You. May Your will be done in our families, in Jesus' name, Amen.
