HE SPEAKS TO ME

One afternoon, Cameron and his brother went for a bike ride. Headed for a construction site, they couldn’t wait to use the mounds of dirt as a makeshift BMX track. As they left, their Mum, working inside the house, had a sinking feeling in her stomach. Worried for their safety and wishing she had stopped them, she decided to pray and ask God to look after them.

About 10 minutes later, Cameron and his brother reappeared and, hopping off their bikes, asked their Mum, ‘What did you call us for?’ She had no idea what they were talking about and explained she had never called them.

Cameron was adamant that just as they got to the construction site, he heard his Mum’s shrill voice calling his name. It was as clear as day. She was just as adamant that she had prayed quietly. The conclusion they came to was that God had spoken to them, allowing them to think they heard their Mum. Who knows what danger they avoided that day!

In Jeremiah 33:3, God says, ‘Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.’

It’s not very often someone hears the actual audible voice of God. It’s possible, but very rare. But God speaks to us in all sorts of other ways. Over time and with practice, you will become more familiar with how He speaks to you. He can speak through His Word, the Bible. He can speak to you through your thoughts, a sermon you hear, or through other people. He can even speak to you through watching creation, listening to music, or through our dreams or circumstances. One way we can know it’s God’s voice is that it's always encouraging, loving and kind.

PRAYER

Dear Jesus,

Thank you for your gentle whispers to my soul, for the truth of Your Word that lights my path, and for the quiet moments when your presence fills my heart with peace. Open my ears to hear you more clearly and tune my heart to recognise your voice.
