HE RESCUED ME

The prayer you may have prayed when you said YES to Jesus is called a prayer of Salvation.

Romans 10:9 says, ‘If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.’

There are two parts to it - we say it with our mouth, using our words, AND we believe what we said in our heart. The Bible makes it clear that when we do that, we are saved. Being saved means God has rescued us. So, what has He rescued us from?

A few years ago, Cameron and I were walking along the water’s edge at South Bank in Brisbane when we heard a splash followed by screams. A little boy playing too close to the edge had fallen in and the murky water swallowed him instantly. Bravely, a stranger jumped in, reached into the liquid dark, and found his little hand, just in time. With one hand clinging to the boy below, the other reaching up with fingers grasping the edge of the ledge, the boy suddenly scaled the man’s back, a tiny, soggy spiderman. He leapt into the arms of his panicked parents who had been watching from above. Clapping cheers erupted from the relieved crowd of onlookers.

We are like the little boy, drowning in the waters of our sin. Jesus is our rescuer. The Bible teaches that all of us have sinned and that sin separates us from God. But God sent His Son, Jesus, to die on the cross, arms outstretched like the man who rescued the boy. It was there He took upon Himself what should have been our punishment. He reached into the dark of sin and death, found our hand, and pulled us up.

He saved us. He saved you. You scaled His back. You said yes. And now, you get to be in relationship with the God of the universe, your very own rescuer.

PRAYER

Dear Jesus,

Thank you that you loved me enough to rescue me. I am so grateful for your sacrifice on the cross, for the shedding of your precious blood to cleanse me of my sins and give me eternal life. You saved me from darkness, you found me when I was lost. I love you and thank you with all my heart.
