Unexpected

DAY 2 OF 28

Reading the Bible can feel intimidating sometimes. But one simple way of studying Scripture is called S.O.A.P. It stands for "Scripture," "Observation," "Application," and "Prayer." We'll show you how—it's easy!

S: Scripture

If you haven't already, read today's passage of Scripture. Then summarize it in your own words.

O: Observation

Read Matthew 1:18–23 again.

  • What stands out to you?
  • What does it reveal to us about grace we can't earn?
  • What questions do you still have?

A: Application

What's something that keeps you from accepting grace in your own life?

What does this passage invite you to do differently when it comes to giving grace to others?

How can you remind yourself to watch for moments of unearned grace during difficult moments?

P: Prayer

Spend some time thinking about a difficult situation that is making it hard to see God's grace. Ask God to reveal what might be happening underneath the surface that's unexpected. Then, say thank you for all the ways God is with you when you can't see the outcome yet.

About this Plan

Unexpected

For many, the Christmas season is bursting with excitement about gifts—what’s on your wish list? What surprises might be under the tree? And what about the joy of finding the perfect present for someone? But the very first Christmas was all about the best, unexpected gift that God picked out for us. In this 4-week devotional series from Grow Curriculum, we’ll explore the Christmas story to reveal the unexpected wrapped in the gift of Jesus! Let’s tie the bows and deck the halls, but most of all, let's celebrate the unexpected ways God is with us this season.
