A Life of Devotion

DAY 5 OF 5

Enthusiasm, Zeal, Intensity and Passion

Devotion isn't a passive word; it is an active word. It is a word that requires action. Devotion requires fervency and passion. Any devotion that lacks fervor isn't devotion at all. Devotion is not wishful thinking. It is rising up daily and plunging yourself into the sea of active pursuit of what you are devoted to and allowing yourself to be drowned by it. In other words, our devotion is what consumes us totally such that all the forces of our being is released towards it.

A man that is devoted to God expresses a level of spiritual fervor that cannot be denied. Lukewarmness or indifference are signs of loss of devotion. The Apostle Paul admonishes us to be fervent in spirit, serving the Lord rather than being slothful (Romans 12:11). Let us look at spiritual fervency in certain ways. There are more but I will share a few here:

  • spiritual fervency is shown in holding fast to God's word and keeping the faith in all diligence (Hebrews 6:11-12)
  • spiritual fervency is seen in consistency in prayer (1 Thessalonians 5:17)
  • spiritual fervency is seen in living a life of joy (1 Thessalonians 5:16)
  • spiritual fervency is choosing to be satisfied in God and not in riches and wealth (Revelations 3:14-22)
  • spiritual fervency is seen in how we carry one another's burdens, seeking to help those who are weak in the body of Christ (Galatians 6:1-2).

All these points shared above and many more reflects the state of our devotion to God.

Reflection:

In what ways can I improve on my spiritual fervency?
