A Life of Devotionਨਮੂਨਾ

A devoted man finds the biddings of His Master a great pleasure. At the core of devotion is obedience. We learnt in the previous lesson that love and devotion are inseparable. When we talk about loving God we simply mean obeying Him. God defines loving Him as obeying Him, and when we obey Him we express the depths of devotion God desires. Our Lord Jesus Christ revealed to us that loving God is obedience to God (John 14:15).

But what does obedience mean? A lot of Christians want to obey some esoteric instructions when they have not obeyed the written scriptures. While God does gives us personal instructions from time to time, we will never qualify for specific and personal instructions if we are not obeying the fundamental instructions given in the Holy Scriptures. Our devotion to obeying the scriptures shows a great deal of the devotion we have towards God. We cannot love or be devoted to God on our own terms. We must learn to embrace His word and desire to obey every command. This is quite difficult because our devotion is no longer measured by us but by God who weighs our actions. It would have been quite easy if we had to just measure ourselves by the things we want to bring to the table, but now the depth of our devotion is measured by how much of God's word we are committed to. He that seeks to be devoted to God must first be devoted to His word.
