Experience Fasting in a New Way

DAY 7 OF 21

Fasting versus diet: a path to God

Have you ever met up with friends to celebrate something and decided that you would treat yourselves to a period of fasting together? Anyone who has ever fasted knows that there is a special power in these times - an opportunity to refocus your life and blossom inwardly. But even those who have already experienced signs and wonders during their fasting period find the challenge of fasting intense. It is not an easy undertaking to go without food for days or even weeks.

But why do we fast? We often associate fasting with renunciation and deprivation. But what is the difference between fasting and a diet? At first glance, both seem to have the same goal: to relieve and cleanse the body. However, while diets are usually driven by external ideals and self-optimization, fasting has a deeper, spiritual dimension.

Fasting as an attitude of the heart

In Joel 2:12-13, God calls us to return to Him with all our heart, with fasting, weeping and mourning. This fasting is more than a physical discipline. It is an expression of our heart, a conscious decision to draw closer to God and give Him space. It is not just about abstaining from food, but about opening our hearts to God, recognizing our dependence on Him and seeking His guidance.

Fasting helps us to see the essentials and detach ourselves from the distractions of everyday life. It teaches us humility, mindfulness, and devotion. The conscious renunciation not only brings physical benefits such as a stronger immune system or more energy but also cleanses our inner self, creates clarity, and gives us deep peace. Studies show that people who fast regularly report greater satisfaction and balance - a sign that fasting goes far beyond the physical level.

Fasting as an encounter with God

Fasting is not a fad, but a practice of closeness to God that has been practiced for centuries. By going without, we realize how much we depend on his love. Fasting helps us to examine our hearts, realign ourselves with God and hear his voice more clearly.

Fasting is not about counting calories or optimizing ourselves. It is an invitation to draw closer to God, to purify our hearts, and to find peace in his presence. It reminds us that we are not living for ourselves, but for the one who created us in love.

Next Step: What are your motives for fasting? Take time in prayer and ask the Holy Spirit what fasting should mean to you.
