Prepare: What has God asked you to do recently that seemed very hard? Which of his promises were you able to hold on to?
Obeying God
In these early chapters of Genesis only Noah and Abram are presented as people who obey God. Abram was given a tall order from God. He was to leave everything that helped define his identity and start out on a new journey of faith in the living God.
Unlike Adam and Eve, Abram was ready to listen and obey. It is a question we should ask ourselves everyday: will I listen to and obey God?
No details
When Abram got the call to leave he wasn’t given much detail about where to go. He was given an incredible promise to hold onto, but no details about how it would be fulfilled.
This is how God continues to deal with his people. He never commands without promising, but often he doesn’t reveal details to us.
Be a blessing
Abram is to leave in order to become a blessing to all people. The disciples were sent by Jesus to be a blessing to all nations (Matthew 28:19,20). We too are to be a blessing to others.
How does that look in your life at the moment? Can you see God reaching others through you? As you reach out in friendship to others, are you conscious of Jesus’ promise to his disciples being for you too: ‘I will be with you always’?
Respond: ‘Lord, help me to listen and obey, showing that I trust you.’
