Prepare: ‘Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see’ (Hebrews 11:1, NIV). ‘Lord, increase my faith!’
A proper burial
When Sarah’s long life came to an end, it was important to Abraham that she be honoured, and properly mourned and buried. In order to buy property as a foreigner, he needed the intercession of a third party (v 8), and he paid a hefty price (v 16). The family was now deeply entrenched in their adopted land.
Lived by faith
Generation upon generation has passed since Sarah was laid to rest in the cave in the field of Machpelah. She had lived by faith, and she ‘was still living by faith when [she] died. [She] did not receive the things promised; [she] only saw them and welcomed them from a distance, admitting [she] was a foreigner and stranger on earth’ (from Hebrews 11:13,14, NIV).
A new era
We now live in a new era of waiting, having received the promise of a Messiah, but holding on for a time when his kingdom will fully arrive. Sarah is one of a ‘great cloud of witnesses’ (Hebrews 12:1, NIV) who have gone before us, inspiring us to live faithfully, joyfully and hopefully, until the great plan of redemption is complete.
Respond: Who has inspired you most in your faith? Are you living in such a way that you are an inspiration to others, as they ‘run with perseverance the race marked out for [them]’? (Hebrews 12:1, NIV).
