The People of God: The Story of the Church

Dag 5 van 31

Israel’s son Joseph saves many from starvation in a famine, and it leads to the family relocating to Egypt. Fast forward 500 years or so, and the situation is not good. After going to Egypt in positive circumstances, the Israelites are now enslaved. The word Exodus means ‘the road out,' and the story follows the road out of Egypt. The man who will lead the people on their journey out of slavery is Moses. The second reading for today tells of how Moses is saved by being placed in a tevah , commonly translated as ‘basket.’ Interestingly, this is the same word used for Noah’s ‘ark.’ Like Noah and the rest of the creatures on the ark, Moses is a symbol of hope running through the dark pages of human history. Pointing both backward to the Eden ideal and forward to God’s plan for salvation.
