De vrouwen begonnen opnieuw te huilen. Toen nam Orpa afscheid van Naomi. Maar Ruth bleef Naomi vasthouden. Naomi zei tegen Ruth: "Kijk, je schoonzus gaat terug naar haar volk en haar goden. Ga nu maar met haar mee!" Maar Ruth antwoordde: "Vraag me alsjeblieft niet om je in de steek te laten. Want waar jij heen gaat, zal ik heen gaan. En waar jij zal slapen, zal ik slapen. Jouw volk is mijn volk en jouw God is mijn God. Waar jij sterft, zal ik sterven en daar zal ik begraven worden. Ik zweer bij de Heer dat alleen de dood ons zal kunnen scheiden." Naomi zag dat Ruth vastbesloten was om met haar mee te gaan. Daarom hield ze erover op.
