Freedom to Love

Galatians 5 begins with a bold call: “It was for freedom that Christ set us free” (Galatians 5:1). Paul warns the Galatians not to submit again to a yoke of slavery, which legalism imposes. Freedom in Christ is not freedom to sin—it’s freedom from the power of sin and from trying to earn our way to God. This echoes John 8:36: “If the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.”

Paul explains that the entire Law is fulfilled in one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself” (Galatians 5:14). But we cannot love others selflessly by our own strength. We must walk by the Spirit, who enables us to resist the flesh and produce godly character. The works of the flesh—like envy, anger, and selfishness—bring destruction, but the fruit of the Spirit brings life.

The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control (Galatians 5:22–23). These aren’t traits we manufacture; they grow as we yield to the Spirit. As we crucify the flesh and live by the Spirit, we reflect the beauty of Christ in our relationships and choices.

Prayer:
Holy Spirit, help me live in the freedom Christ has given me. Teach me to walk by Your power and bear fruit that reflects Jesus. Let love lead every action and every word today. Amen.
