From Slaves to Sons

Paul uses a powerful analogy to explain our transformation in Christ: a child, though heir to everything, is treated like a servant until the time set by the father (Galatians 4:1–2). Similarly, before Christ, we were under the guardianship of the Law—bound and immature. But when the fullness of time came, God sent His Son so that we might receive adoption as sons and daughters (Galatians 4:4–5).

This adoption changes everything. We’re not just forgiven—we’re family. Galatians 4:6 declares that God has sent the Spirit of His Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba, Father.” This echoes Romans 8:15, where believers are said to no longer have a spirit of slavery but a spirit of adoption. We don’t relate to God as a distant ruler but as a loving Father who welcomes us intimately.

Despite this freedom, Paul laments that the Galatians are turning back to slavery, observing religious rituals as if they could earn God’s favor. He pleads with them as a spiritual father, reminding them of the joy they once had in the gospel. The Christian life is not about rules—it’s about relationship. As God’s children, we are free to love and live under His grace.

Abba Father, thank You for adopting me into Your family. I no longer have to earn Your acceptance—I belong to You. Help me walk in the freedom of sonship, not in fear or performance. Amen.
