This sixth ‘I am’ statement is divided into three parts and yet it forms an inseparable unity: “I am the way, the truth and the life.” All of these belong together. If it were separated into its individual parts it would be like a dismantled car. It would not drive one millimeter. “The way, the truth and the life” describes God’s nature, which was made visible for us through Jesus. Everything aims to attain the life that Jesus describes in John 10:10: “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.”

Part of our ICF culture is that we are excited about life. A life with Jesus. And it is precisely a life with Jesus, that we desire to live. We follow him day by day and ask ourselves what the next step is. We live sincerely: the truth is like a shining light in us, towards which the Holy Spirit guides us. That doesn’t necessarily mean that we have all the material things that we would like. But an abundant life is a life of joy, peace and strength. We enjoy fellowship with God and with all those who share the same faith.

And whenever the thief wants to steal this life, we should be alarmed. This could be when we want to pray with our children, but somehow there is no peace. Or when we want to withdraw for some time to pray and there are constantly distractions to keep us from doing the most important thing in our day. At times like these: be careful. Do not let life be taken away from you. Jesus wants you to do even greater tasks. Jesus’ disciples continued and expanded his work, because Jesus works in many people at the same time, through the Holy Spirit. Therefore it is all the more important that you continue to protect this life and become aware of the authority you have in Christ.

ACTION STEP:

Decide to do one thing to cultivate this ‘life in abundance’ anew (e.g. take a walk with God, regular prayer while driving, something that fills your spiritual tank). Repeat what you have decided to do for 21 days. Then it can become a new habit.
