Work as Worship: A 5-Day Video Bible Study

Dividing secular from sacred is tempting. Too often people place clergy and church leadership on a pedestal, as if their work is more pleasing to God than any other “unspiritual” job. But the apostle Paul, in Colossians 3:23, debunks that philosophy when he teaches the church (all of them), “Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ.” The florist in this story believes she’s unworthy. “I’m just a florist… small shop… nothing special.” Maybe her first mistake is comparing herself to others. Sound familiar? But we see her skill with handling flowers, arranging them attractively, enjoying how they bring a smile to people’s faces. She eventually realized that she has a gift, and that her gift is important. “I do my best to make them beautiful for people.” Two truths are at play here: First, when we see other believers working at churches or going into the mission field, we may be tempted to diminish our own importance and value to God's kingdom. The florist reminds us that ministry is not a job but a way of life for every Christ-follower. Second, the florist illustrates 1 Peter 4:10, “As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God's varied grace.” God has given each of us different gifts—some shine in public, gaining attention and fanfare, while others glow in the background serving and blessing those around them. God wants each person to recognize the value of every gift and to practice, labor, and share them “as good stewards of his varied grace.” Though she never saw it, the florist’s gift brightened the office, brought comfort to the grieving, enhanced a joyful occasion, and brought a smile to the lonely. Her gift also softened her hurting neighbor’s heart, opening the door to a new friendship. She’s not “just” a florist, and you aren’t “just” a mom, mechanic, secretary, bus driver, or any other behind-the-scenes worker. Your work matters, even if you can’t see its impact directly. God has gifted you to do it, and it pleases Him to see you flourish in it. How does this truth challenge you? Encourage you? Think of someone in your life who seems to think like the florist and find a way to build him or her up in the truth that God gifted them specifically for His purposes.
