The Comfort of Vanilla

The world’s most popular flavor of ice cream is vanilla. It’s a little rich but also smooth and satisfying, without being too heavy. Rich and satisfying also describe the goodness of God's Word. If you’re feeling down or you're stuck trying to decide what to read or where to turn, nothing says comfort like the Book of Psalms.

King David and his contemporaries excelled in beautiful poetry and songs that spoke deeply to the heart. There isn’t a topic of life not covered by Psalms: love, hate, betrayal, depression, fear, abandonment, victory, defeat, death, joy, sadness, sickness. The list goes on.

Many psalms start out with a cry or complaint about the injustice of life. It’s comforting to know we can be real as we bring our troubles to God. But even better, these kinds of psalms end with trust that God is able to deal with any issue because He is sovereign, loving and faithful — even when we are not!

There’s even more to discover in Psalms than life’s ups and downs. The New Testament frequently quotes Psalms because many spoke of Jesus: He’s the Son of God (Psalm 2), He’s worthy of worship (Psalm 97), He’s the forever King (Psalm 45), He atoned for our sins (Psalm 65). In fact, it’s hard to find a psalm that doesn’t somehow reference Jesus.

• What’s your favorite psalm? Why does it speak to your heart?
• Have you ever thought that you can’t “be real” with God?
• When you read from the Book of Psalms, start a list of each time you find a reference to Jesus. What does it tell you about Him and His character?
