On a warm summer afternoon, you might hear that familiar sound faintly around a street corner — the gentle, whimsical chime of the ice cream truck. Cold ice cream in the heat of a warm afternoon provides a kind of comfort that makes the temperature more bearable. The truth is that most of us crave ice cream as soon as we hear the song in the distance. Ice cream is a treat — a thing to be enjoyed and savored!

Far better than a favorite treat, God’s Word is a delight for us that is "sweeter than honey" (Psalm 119:103, NLT). It’s both a thing of substance and also a source of enjoyment. It was given for us to know God and have a deeper, more satisfying relationship with Him.

But how often do we treat the Bible like a plate of something our parents forced us to stay at the dinner table to eat rather than a refreshing, sweet dessert?

John 1:1 tells us that the Word is so much more than a book. It’s actually a person — God's son, Jesus. He embodies the truth, the hope and the ultimate message of salvation and abundant life found in the Scriptures.

Both the Old Testament and the New Testament tell the story of Jesus from before time began to His eternal Kingdom. St. Augustine said of the Scriptures that “the new is the old concealed; the old is the new revealed.” And 2 Timothy 3:16-17 reminds us that “all Scripture is inspired by God and is useful …” (NLT). With so much wisdom, instruction and joy in the Bible, what undiscovered flavor have you missed?

Like the surprise of chocolate chip cookie dough or crunchy pecans in your ice cream, discovering the delicious truths of God’s Word will make you crave more. Over the next six days, we’ll dive into the ways you can “taste and see” (Psalm 34:8, NLT) more about God when you study the Bible.

• What’s the hardest book of the Bible for you to read? Could there be something in it about Jesus that you’re missing?
• Commit yourself to reading a book of the Bible you haven’t read, or to rereading one that you've struggled through in the past. Ask God to show you a truth to savor.
